Impossible Cornucopia
William Eicholtz
Impossible Cornucopia, 2008
Impossible Cornucopia presents a classical harvest figure, a Bacchus-like Adonis, poised atop a high Baroque pedestal formed as a bedroom chest, presiding over drawers spilling an abundant bounty.
The work embraces playful artifice. Its faux-ceramic façade suggests weight and permanence, yet reveals itself as a constructed facsimile of fertility - theatrical, erotic and knowingly decorative. Like a European statue displaced in time, the figure performs amid lush ornamentation, here set against the character of the Balnarring barn.
